Suicide Prevention Awareness
Gallia Jackson Meigs Suicide Awareness Committees are working to prevent suicide through awareness, education, collaboration, support, improved access to mental health care and community resources.
Our mission:
To prevent suicide through awareness, education, collaboration, support, improved access to mental health care and community resources.
Why we are a collaborative
In Ohio, nearly five people die by suicide each day. Over a 10 year period (2008-2017) Gallia, Jackson, and Meigs Counties ranked in the top ten as highest counties at risk of suicide in Ohio. Where 9 out of 10 counties are in Appalachia.
The average annual rates of suicide per 100,000 in each county were:
#1 Meigs County 21.46
#2 Jackson County 19.86
#3 Gallia County 17.78
All three counties have come together to collaborate in education, advocacy, support and prevention with respect for the unique qualities and strengths of these Appalachian communities.
Many people are still hesitant to discuss suicide due to stigma. Stigma creates a barrier to help-seeking behavior for people who have suicidal thoughts, have previously attempted suicide, or lost a loved one to suicide.
